A pure albino Black-headed Gull in the roost, 17th February.

Image:

This strange gull was in the roost on 15th February. It appears to be an aberrant Black-headed Gull but may be a hybrid Black-headed x Mediterranean Gull. It has a very pale pearly grey mantle and very bright bill. There is something odd going on in the primaries, but was not seen to wing-stretch or fly. It seems to be masquerading as a 2nd winter Med' Gull (see below for the real thing!).

Second winter Mediterranean Gull, 14th February. One of two Med' Gulls in the roost tonight.

The Turnstone still present, 12th February.

Drake Gadwall, 29th January.

Turnstone, 29th January. A very rare bird in winter with just one other record: 27th January 2005.

Image:

Adult Black-headed Gull, 24th January. At least 20+ individuals in the roost are 'colouring-up', ie: attaining breeding plumage, it has been suggested that these are local birds, at any rate it's an indication that spring is not that far away......

First winter Great Black-backed Gull, 24th January.

Image:

Adult Common Gull, 24th January.

Image:

Adult Iceland Gull, 19th January. With little else of note to be seen, this seems to be the bird of the moment. It's spending the daytime at Dix Pit and showed well there today late afternoon, moving off to roost at Farmoor at 16.45.
